Lost Forever 26.04 BTC Burned In 2016

Lost coins only make everyone else’s coins worth slightly more. Think of it as a donation to everyone.

– Satoshi Nakamoto

There will eventually be 21 million bitcoins mined however that will never be the true number in circulation. The distinction is important if you want to precisely measure bitcoin value and market capitalization which is setting new records. Not all bitcoin addresses can be spent. The genesis block can never be spent. Likewise any bitcoin sent to a “burn” address are also forever unspendable. A bitcoin burn address is like an impossible vanity address. There is no private key to a burn address and one would be impossible to generate. These are not merely ‘zombies‘ but truly gone forever. How many bitcoins have been “burned” exactly?

As of last October a website called BTCBurns.cf identified 397 burn addresses containing 2,657.8686 BTC lost forever. It has gone offline. Since it stopped keeping track 26.04 additional bitcoins have been sent to these addresses.

The total number of unspendable bitcoins is at least 2,733.9086. This does not include situations like lost hardware and private keys. Nor does it include Satoshi’s first mined blocks which are unlikely to be spent.

The address with the highest balance is 1CounterpartyXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXUWLpVr with 2,130.85 BTC burned.

The address with the most transactions is 1111111111111111111114oLvT2
with 36504 and is also the address with the most recent transaction (today).

What To Do If Scammed Out Of Bitcoin

What can I do if I’ve been scammed out of bitcoin?

We get inquiries like this daily. Fortunately, there are a few options.

Needless to say, the best thing to do is not to get scammed in the first place. Before sending anyone you don’t know valuable bitcoins you should perform some due diligence on BitcoinWhosWho.com or sites like badbitcoin.org to see if the website is known for fraudulent transactions. 99Bitcoins.com also provides a great scam test questionnaire.

It is impossible to unilaterally reverse transactions once confirmed on the bitcoin blockchain, but, if you’ve already sent BTC to someone who is no longer responding to your emails and you now believe is a fraud, you can take some action.

First, you can flag the address on BitcoinWhosWho.com so everyone can see it’s a scam and read why.

Flag Scam Bitcoin Addresses
Flag Scam Bitcoin Addresses

Second, you can check for any identifying characteristics about the bitcoin address. It only takes one mistake for a scammer to be exposed forever on the blockchain. Check the Bitcoin Who’s Who Bitcoin Address Report for;

  • Website Appearances. See if the address has ever appeared on any websites that could be used to identify the scammer.
  • The “Last Transaction IP” Address. It’s possible this IP address belongs to the scammer and can be used to identify his or her location.
  • Wallet Name. The wallet name may lead you to an exchange or service that can be subpoenaed.
  • Recent Transaction w/ Known Entities. The address may have recently transacted with an entity that can be subpoenaed
  • Monitor Future Transactions. Setup an email alert or “watch” to be notified when your BTC gets moved to another address that can possibly be identified

Third, contact your local law enforcement agency and file a report with ic3.gov

$7,100 “Casacius” physical bitcoin
UPDATED 6/13/17: A second 2011 first series Casascius physical bitcoin has sold on eBay for $10,100, eclipsing the previous record set last week by $3,000! This one was not in mint condition either having been “removed from the capsule only twice”. The address 16cVGhzpeNzCKNcz4q5jBoKzNJRKHds4av still shows 1 BTC.

ORIGINAL: A mint 2011 series 1 Casascius physical bitcoin sold for USD $7,100 on eBay yesterday. The address, 17xS2adEin5TYQU4xnaBYaHoQDEzHvkg6L, containing 1 BTC, attracted 14 bidders and started at $.99 on May 26th. A bidding war for the “physical” bitcoin reached $2,500 after the first day and $4,050 to start the last day June 5.

First series Casascius coins are highly sought after by collectors. During the last bitcoin price spike in 2013 many changed hands on eBay for about ~USD$3,000.

5,140 of the 11,000 first series 1 BTC Casascius coins in circulation contain the same error, a missing “s” in the watermark, according to elianite.

A far more rare “double error” version of the 2011 series Casascius coin exists where the “S” is missing and the firstbits are printed 3mm higher than the others. Only 5 of these are known to exist and one of those is thought to have been spent. How much do you think that would go for?!

Casascius coins were originally created by Mike Caldwell starting in September 2011 and continued until November 2013 when he was shut down by the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN), a branch of the Treasury Department. See also bitcoinwiki.

The Austin Cain Facebook Scam

We received multiple reports of a bitcoin scam run by “Austin Cain” on Facebook going dark this week. It sounds like a classic ponzi scheme exit.

This is one of the “Invest Coins with Austin” addresses 1FXNLk9BVUt7fCHuu8GQtSCukR4CiyYA6D with total received balance of 39.84 BTC. The Facebook group is no longer accessible. It appears the ponzi is over and Austin is on the run. One of our informants has reported him to the Australian Cybercrime Online Reporting Network (ACORN).

You can run but it’s hard to hide forever on the Bitcoin blockchain Austin.

The arbX Digital Ponzi Scheme Exit

$

We received multiple scam reports of a likely 3000 BTC ponzi exit in South Africa yesterday. Jonathan Weltman, founder of arbX Digital (@arbXdigital), informed his investors he lost all funds via email a few days after the twittersphere erupted with complaints about no redemptions or communications.

From one informant.

arbX ran a crypto fund doing mostly arbitrage. Just a few days ago the founder sent out emails to all investors explaining how he has lost all funds

, but through talking to him it became quite obvious that this was most likely a ponzi to begin with and no investor has seen evidence that real trading ever happened. The fund was run by Jonathan Weltman from South Africa (identity verified), operations started in 2015 and reached a size of 3000 BTC. Shares were first traded directly with arbX (I guess, not sure on that one), later on it was all moved to coinprism and finally to BTCPop.
The investors have started a closed Facebook group… this is the best source of information on the scam. We’ve started to trace money on the blockchain and through your website were able to link arbX with other HYIP sites

The group is seeking a lawyer in South Africa to represent investors in this case. Contact us if you are interested in getting involved.

The Bitcoin Scam Blackmail Email Text

I do not want to judge anyone, but in sum of few cases, we have touchpoint from now. I do not think that caress oneself is very ill, but when all your acquaintances see it- its obviously bad.

So, closer to the point. You visited the website with porn, which I’ve adjusted with the deleterious soft. After you chose video, virus started working and your device became acting as rdp since that moment. Naturally, all cams and screen started recording instantly and then my soft collected all contacts from your device.

I text you on this e-mail address, cuz I’ve collected it with my soft, and I think you for sure check this work e-mail.

The most interesting point that I created video, on one side it shows your screen record, on second your cams record. Its very amusingly. But it wasn’t so easy .

All in all- if you want me to erase all this compromising evidence, here is my BTC wallet address- [] (it should be without «spaces» or « aquo;,check
it). If you do not know how to make btc transactions, you can ask google or youtube for advice- its very easy. I suggest, that 340 usd will finish our problem and will destroy our point of contact in perpetuity. You have one day after reading this letter(I put special pixel in it, ill know when you open it). If you do not able to finish transaction, ill share the compromising with all contacts I’
ve collected from you.

I do not think that cops can find me for only one day(not even 10 days), so think twice, you can lose your honor. Sorry for misprints, I am foreign.

BitcoinWhosWho received multiple reports about a million dollar bitcoin scam run by mybtgwallet.com. Sounds like a typical ‘trick people into giving up their private key’ scheme, just on a massive scale.

Actual accounts taken from selected scam reports

This site was listed on the official bitcoingold.org website as a wallet provider. It has since been removed…

Phished the mnemonic seed and stole many people’s coins. The site was linked from official bitcoin gold website.

they stole all my funds through Bitcoin gold.org official website they asked for my seed phrase phrase to claim btg but they stole my btc

Phished the seed mnemonic of many people under false pretense as a way to get BTG after the fork. The link to this website was listed on the official bitcoin gold website (bitcoingold.org), and was also deemed “safe and secure” by the team.

Claiming BTG Bitcoin Gold ends up with empty BTG BTC ETH Wallets..

The total received by the addresses reported so far exceeds 190 BTC (191.391981 ~ USD$1,479,461).

Don’t Be Fooled By Colnbase or MyEthenWallet Scams

We received two somewhat convincing phishing emails recently from colnbase.support and myethenwallet.com. Hilarious misspelling aside, it’s not so funny if one of these scams tricks you into entering your private information on the bogus websites they provide.

BitcoinWhosWho does not have any bitcoin addresses associated, please report if you know any!

MyEthenWallet

mailer@myethenwallet.com

Hi bitcoinwhoswho.com,
MyEtherWallet has recently been targeted by attackers trying to obtain access to wallets on the Ethereum network.
In order to prevent any other security issues, we have implemented Two Factor Authentication.
However, the Two Factor Authentication wallet security has to be activated by our users manually.

In order to set up Two Factor Authentication and to secure your wallet, please visit the link below to upgrade your wallet to the new security protocols.

UPGRADE YOUR WALLET

“PLEASE UPDATE YOUR WALLET ON HERE AS SOON AS POSSIBLE IN ORDER TO MINIMIZE THE RISK OF LOSING FUNDS OR TOKENS.”
Thanks and be well,

Expect some version of this text;

Hello

I want you to take this message seriously, if you value your life, since this is not a joke.
I have been thinking for a very long period of time whether it is worth sending this message or not to you and decided that after all you still have the right to know. I will try to be as short as possible. I’ve got an order to remove you, because your activity causes discomfort to a particular man. I studied you for a long period oftime and decided to give you a second chance, despite the specifics of my work, the ethics of which do not allow me to do this, as this will kill my reputation (more 11 years of perfect order executions). But i decided to break a rule since this is my last order (hope so).

In general, let’s Get down to business. I want you to pay the amount of 0.4 Btc. I accept btc. Information on how to send you can easily find in Google. Here are my payment details:

[see associated bitcoin addresses]

When i will receive funds – I will tell you his name, plus all other the evidence i have. You then will be able to use this information with the police. I would not recommend you to contact the police, because you have a little time (3 days) and they will not have enough time to investigate.
Responding to this letter doesn’t make any sense, because i use one-time mailbox, because i care about my anonymousness. I will contact you as soon as i will receive money.
I seriously feel sorry that you became my victim.

BitcoinWhosWho received a couple reports about a Coinbase support phone scam. 1-888-455-1155 is not a real Coinbase support number! It’s a fake that shows up in a lot of web search results.

The scam according to one report.

Users google “coinbase phone support” and get a phone number from google’s search results that leads them to a sophisticated scam in which an operator tells them to send money…

The scam has yielded at least 13.75 BTC so far.
